How to use the Halloween maze generator
- Look at the preview. It opens on a pumpkin maze at Easy difficulty.
- Click a shape button next to the preview: pumpkin, ghost, bat or witch hat. For other shapes, open ‘More shapes’ on the Design tab.
- Choose a difficulty level, from Very easy to Expert.
- Turn on ‘Kid-friendly (thicker walls, wider paths)’, under More options on the Design tab, if the maze is for a young child who will draw the route with a crayon.
- Type a new name in the Title field if you want something other than the default, such as ‘Pumpkin Maze’.
- Click ‘Show solution’ to draw the shortest route in red. Check it before you print, or keep it hidden for players.
- On the Print tab, set ‘Mazes per page’, ‘Number of pages’, ‘Paper size’ (US Letter or A4), and whether to ‘Add answer pages’. You can also turn on the title, numbering, Start and Finish labels, or pick the Worksheet layout, which adds a name and date line.
- Check the preview of page 1, then click ‘Print / Save as PDF’. In the print dialog, choose ‘Save as PDF’ as the destination to get a file.
To get a different maze with the same settings, click ‘New maze’. To share the exact maze, click ‘Copy link’. ‘Download SVG’ and ‘Download PNG’ save the preview as an image.
Which Halloween shapes are there?
There are four Halloween shapes on this page: a pumpkin with a jack-o’-lantern face, a ghost, a bat, and a witch hat. The pumpkin and ghost have eyes cut out of the maze, so those eyes are solid walls that the route has to go around. The bat and witch hat have no cut-outs.
The shape sets the outline of the maze, and the Start and Finish are placed on that outline. The tool puts them at the two points that are farthest apart along the maze’s paths, so the route is usually long.
Is there an easy Halloween maze for preschool?
Yes. Choose Very easy for the simplest route, or turn on the kid-friendly option to get thicker walls and wider paths. The kid-friendly setting uses about 20 % fewer cells for the same difficulty, which leaves more room to draw with a crayon.
A pumpkin at Very easy has a route of about 56 cells and 13 dead ends on average, while Easy is about 107 cells. Stick to Very easy for children who are just learning to follow a path, and move up when they can finish it without help.
What can I use a Halloween maze for at a party?
A classroom Halloween party works well with a set of mazes at Very easy or Easy, printed several per page. Set ‘Mazes per page’ to 2 or 4 and ‘Number the mazes’ so children can work through them in order.
For trick-or-treat bag stuffers, print 4 or 6 mazes per page and cut the sheet apart, or save single mazes as PNG files. For a party game with answers, use ‘Number of pages’ to make a full set, turn on ‘Add answer pages’, and print the answer pages separately so players cannot see them.
How do the difficulty levels change a Halloween maze?
Difficulty sets how many cells the picture is divided into. Very easy uses 16 cells across the picture, Easy uses 24, Medium 32, Hard 44, Very hard 56 and Expert 70. More cells make a longer route, more dead ends and a smoother outline.
A ghost is taller and larger than a pumpkin, so its route is longer at the same level. On average, a Hard ghost has about 740 cells in its route, compared with about 400 for a Hard pumpkin, and a Hard pumpkin has about 107 dead ends. These figures are averages from 20 mazes generated on this site.
Frequently asked questions
Is the printable Halloween maze free?
Yes. The generator runs in your web browser at no cost and needs no sign-up. You can make, print and download as many mazes as you like.
Can I print the answers?
Yes. Turn on ‘Add answer pages’ in the Print tab. The answer pages come after the maze pages and show the route in red. Print them separately if you are using the mazes as a game.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The tool runs in the phone or tablet browser, so there is nothing to install, and the layout fits small screens. Printing uses your browser’s own print dialog, and ‘Download SVG’ and ‘Download PNG’ save the preview as a file you can open or send from your device.
Can I get the exact same maze again?
Yes. Every maze is built from a seed, so the same seed and settings always give the same maze. Click ‘Copy link’ to share it, and a reprint will be identical. Click ‘New maze’ if you want a different one with the same settings.
Are the Halloween mazes scary?
No. They are picture puzzles drawn as plain black lines on white, with no scary images, so they suit young children and classrooms.
