Free printable mazes and maze generator

Maze Generator

Set the size, shape and algorithm, then print the maze or download it as SVG or PNG.

This maze generator makes printable mazes in a few clicks. It is free, runs in your web browser, and needs no sign-up or installation. Each maze is made on your device, and nothing you create is uploaded.

You can choose a rectangle, a circle or a custom shape, set the size, and pick one of eight carving methods. Extra routes, open rooms and a centre goal change how the maze plays. When a maze looks right, print it, save it as a PDF, or download it as an SVG or PNG. Use it as a maze maker, maze builder or maze creator for worksheets, party games or brain teasers. You can also make a circle maze, or a maze with rooms or several paths.

How to use the Maze Generator

  1. The page opens on the Design tab with More options already open. Pick a Maze type: Rectangle, Circle or Shape.
  2. Set Width (cells) and Height (cells) from 3 to 100. For circle mazes, set Rings from 3 to 60. For shape mazes, set Detail (cells across) from 12 to 80.
  3. Choose an Algorithm.
  4. Set Extra routes from 0 % (a perfect maze) upwards.
  5. Set Open rooms from 0 to 6. Tick Open room in the centre as the goal if you want the Finish in the middle.
  6. Choose Entrance and exit: Opposite corners, Opposite sides or Farthest apart.
  7. Pick Wall thickness and Wall colour.
  8. Click Show solution to draw the route in red.
  9. Click New maze for a different maze with the same settings.
  10. Open the Print tab. Set Mazes per page, Number of pages, Paper size, Page layout and the label options.
  11. Check the preview of page 1 and of the answer page, then click Print / Save as PDF, or use Download SVG or Download PNG for a single maze.

Every maze comes from a seed. Copy link shares the exact maze, and a reprint looks identical. New seed picks a new seed with the same settings, and Reset to preset goes back to the settings of the chosen difficulty.

How does a maze generator work?

A maze generator carves passages through a grid of cells by removing walls between neighbouring cells. The order in which it removes walls is set by the algorithm you choose. When the result has no loops and every cell connects to every other, it is a perfect maze with exactly one path between any two cells.

With Extra routes at 0 %, the maze stays perfect. Higher values open some walls to create loops, so several routes reach the Finish and fewer dead ends remain. On 20 x 20 mazes, the tool measured about 41 dead ends at 0 %, 31 at 25 %, 20 at 50 % and none at 100 %.

The tool also computes the shortest route from Start to Finish. That is the route that Show solution draws in red.

Which maze algorithm makes the hardest maze?

The recursive backtracker makes the hardest maze of the algorithms offered, because its shortest route is the longest. Across 20 mazes of 20 x 20 cells, its route averaged about 107 cells. Kruskal averaged about 58, Wilson about 57, hunt and kill about 76, and Prim about 43.

The recursive backtracker builds long winding corridors with few branches, which gives the classic maze look. This is why every difficulty preset uses it. Prim’s algorithm grows the maze outward from one cell, adding a random neighbouring cell each time. It produces many more dead ends, about 131 on average, but its routes are shorter, so it can confuse without being long to solve.

Wilson’s algorithm uses loop-erased random walks and gives every possible perfect maze the same chance, so it has no visual bias. Kruskal’s algorithm removes walls in random order whenever the two cells are not yet connected. For younger players, Binary tree is simple and has an open run along two edges. Sidewinder has horizontal corridors with one open row along the top.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a maze with several solutions?

Yes. Set Extra routes above 0 %. Higher values open walls and remove dead ends, so several routes lead to the Finish. At 100 %, the maze has no dead ends.

Can I make a maze with rooms or a centre room?

Yes. On rectangle mazes, Open rooms adds 0 to 6 open areas, each 2 x 2 to 4 x 4 cells with no walls inside. Tick Open room in the centre as the goal to place the Finish in a room in the middle.

Can I use the mazes commercially?

Yes, for personal, school, classroom and business use: what you make with the tool is yours to use. The terms only ask that you do not resell the mazes as a stand-alone product or copy the site.

Is it free?

Yes. The tool is free, requires no sign-up and needs nothing installed. It runs in your browser, and mazes are made on your device without being uploaded.

Can I print the answers?

Yes. Turn on Add answer pages in the Print tab. The answer pages come after the maze pages and show the solution in red. Check the preview before you print.

Can I make a circle maze?

Yes. Choose Circle as the Maze type and set Rings from 3 to 60. Circle mazes use the same extra route setting and six of the eight algorithms; Binary tree and Sidewinder work on rectangles only.
